Mission statement
The Institute of People Management (IPM) dedicates its efforts to providing knowledge and tools for strategic people development and leadership. It is a professional non-profit association and offers membership and services to HR Professionals and all those involved in people management and development.

Purpose of the code

This code underpins the IPMs commitment to establishing and maintaining good practice within the HR profession and to building that good practice into the future.   HR professionals who join the IPM agree to abide by the standards set out in this code.

The Standards of Professional Conduct

The HR Professional must strive to provide informed and insightful information, advice and guidance on effective human resources management and development for all stakeholders, including employers and employees.To undertake this task it is necessary that they:

  1. exercise competence in relation to the Institute’s professional standards, levels of membership and any associated recognised qualifications,
  2. recognise the boundaries of their own competence and do not act outside of the limitations of their own knowledge and skills, do not undertake activity where they are not appropriately prepared or suitably qualified, or seek appropriate support if new needs are identified,
  3. accept full responsibility for their own actions and for any decisions they take,
  4. show a commitment to their own continuous professional development through refreshing and deepening their own professional knowledge, skills and competence,
  5. act with honesty and integrity, and aim to build relationships of trust and respect,
  6. adhere to needs for confidentiality and not disclose any commercially sensitive information or disclose personal information without consent,
  7. lead the profession by example through modelling the professional behaviours of timeliness, diplomacy and respect for others and their points of view, ensuring the appropriateness and accuracy of information and guidance provided, exercising due diligence, and creating and nurturing an ethical work environment.
  8. The HR Professional shows a dedication to advancing the profession and its standing through adhering to the code of conduct and thus effecting good HR practice and associated results, but also through championing the profession and educating business and other stakeholders about the nature of good practice within the field.
  9. The HR Professional shows a steadfast commitment to enhancing individual learning and development and to establishing the processes and structures that will assist the organisation to meet its current and future business objectives.This commitment should be well-evidenced through the care taken to ensure those working for them have the appropriate level of competence, supervision and support.
  10. The HR Professional must act within the law and must not encourage, assist or collude with others who are or may be engaged in unlawful conduct.They should also challenge if they suspect unlawful or unethical conduct or behaviour.
  11. HR Professionals will seek to create a climate of non-discrimination and equal opportunity through employment practices and will establish fair, reasonable and equitable standards of treatment by their employer and employees in the organisation, through their own behaviour and through the policies they implement.
